Three birthdays in December ~ No. 2 (December 1954; actual size approx. 9.5 x 7.6 in. (24.1 x 19.3 cm.)). As my mother lights the candles, my brother Geoffrey makes his way into the picture. Their birthdays are December 13th (Suzy), 21st (Dad), and 25th (Baba). My grandmother's birthday, I'm quite certain, is purely apocryphal. She had no idea when she was born, and for that matter she never quite knew her actual age. I'm told that when she emigrated to the U.S., immigration officials arbitrarily assigned Christmas day as her birthday, and anglicized her name to "Helen."
