For my fifth, my mom submits a devil's food cake that she baked with what was then one of those newfangled cake mixes in a box. I didn't care that the cake was almost pre-fab; I thought it tasted damned good, I'm sure! Our grandmother, Baba, is pictured at the center. Prior to 1956, my dad was fairly scrupulous about date-stamping these birthday photos; afterward, and/or when he switched jobs (from the Mirror-Daily News to the L.A. Herald-Express), he became rather less so. Lightly retouched to remove small scratches and black spots.
